In this article, we analyze and review Geritol. Sometimes misspelled ‘Gerital’, we look closer at this age-old product to see how effective it really is.
We’ll be looking at several versions of this supplement to see if it is the best option out there for you.
What is Geritol Used For?
Geritol is an orally taken multivitamin and iron product which is used to treat / prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies from either poor diet, illness, pregnancy or other circumstances.
Vitamins and iron are important parts of both the male and female diet and making sure you have enough of them is the best way to support good health.
Gertiol provides benefits to those who aren’t getting enough vitamins and minerals in their diet.
This could either be due to their lifestyle or circumstances beyond their control. Regardless of the reason, Geritol can provide benefits such as:
- Helping fight vitamin deficiencies – Get more of what your missing.
- Boost overall mineral count – Put more minerals into your diet.
- Help optimize health – Give your body more of what it needs to promote general health.
What is Geritol? (Multivitamin)
Geritol is a company from the United States that makes numerous multivitamin and dietary supplements.
It was originally an alcohol-based iron and Vitamin B complex tonic introduced in August 1950. It has been on the market for nearly 70 years.
Since then the brand has grown into many varieties and forms and sold all over the country. It’s a major household brand, but it comes various forms. Below, we’ll take you through the most well-known forms of Geritol and how it can help you.
Geritol Liquid (Formerly Geritol Tonic)
This is one of the most common form of Geritol: Geritol Liquid. This is was originally known as Geritol Tonic.
It’s the fluid version of this multivitamin and is touted for it’s ability to promote energy.
It comes with a high level of both iron and vitamin B. It also contains a small amount of Choline Bitartrate which can help promote your focus to some degree.
Many people prefer this form of Geritol because it is easy to drink, unlike the tablet form which requires you to swallow it with water.
Geritol for Seniors
The standard Geritol Multivitamin is recommended for seniors and some websites have the belief that this is Geritol’s target audience. This comes from the name Geritol being similar to the term Geriatric.
That said, Geritol is a comprehensive multivitamin and may be able to supply a senior citizen with the extra vitamins and minerals they need. Good examples are vitamin D and calcium for bone density, vitamin Bs for energy and antioxidants to support the immune system.
There is currently no Geritol that is specifically aimed at senior citizens – but senior citizens may be able to benefit from taking it.
Geritol Complete (and Fertility)
This is the most comprehensive form of Geritol: Geritol Complete. It is thought to have all the minerals and vitamins a body needs with Vitamins A, C and E in antioxidant form.
It’s a good option for any full-grown adult to take who has any vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
One of the more interesting stories with this product are the rumors that Geritol Complete and Fertility go hand-in-hand. Many people believe that if you’re trying for a baby your chances increase by using Geritol Complete.
This is however, not the case. Geritol have publicly addressed this rumor and not sure how it got started. They have publicly stated that Geritol Complete or any Geritol product does not actively promote fertility or chances of a baby.
Below is the list of ingredients for a regular bottle of Geritol:
- Iron – 18.00 mg (100.00% RDI)
- Niacin – 50.00 mg (250.00% RDI)
- Vitamin B6 – 0.50 mg (25.00% RDI)
- Pantothenic Acid – 2.00 mg (20.00% RDI)
As you can see, there’s a lot of Vitmain Bs in here and Iron, but not much else. This is good for helping give you energy, or helping with an iron deficiency but aside from that there’s not too much of a difference it’s going to make to your system.
Geritol Complete on the other hand may be a better option as it contains numerous vitamins and minerals in an attempt to cover all based to give your body much more of what it needs.
Geritol Side Effects
Although unlikely the following side effects have been linked to Geritol:
- Upset Stomach
There’s also a chance that the iron in Geritol may turn your stool black. But this is if you already have a lot of iron in your system.
If you have any concerns, preexisting conditions, or allergies – you should speak to your doctor before using this supplement.
Which is better: Geritol Pills or Liquid?
Gertiol Liquid is arguably better than Geritol Pills.
The reason for this is that there is a risk that the pills may not break apart fully after being consumed. This applies particularly to cheaper to manufacturer pills.
Another reason that liquid may be more preferable is that some people struggle to swallow pills. By having a Geritol Liquid, it’s easier for your body to absorb when compared to Geritol pills.
If you still want to use Geritol as a Prenatal vitamin, despite the company saying it’s a false rumor that Geritol helps pregnancy, here’s what you need to know.
Geritol contains a good amount of Vitmain B which plays a role in the spinal development of a baby. However, it should be pointed out that most prenatal vitamins contain more vitamin B than you would get in your standard bottle of Geritol.
Iron that’s in Geritol is also important for pregnancy, it’s good for your blood and when you’re pregnancy your blood volume can increase by up to 40%.
However, by increasing your iron intake you can harden up your stools to the point of constipation. Most prenatal vitamins contain stool softener to avoid this problem – Geritol doesn’t. It is not designed with your pregnancy in mind.
Geritol Reviews Pregnant
If you go looking for Geritol reviews from people using it to get pregnant, you’ll get some very interesting results.
We did some field research and found that some women have had great results from using Geritol to get pregnant – then switching to prenatal vitamins straight after getting confirmation that they had a baby coming.
Whereas some women claim it has no effect at all on their fertility.
In our opinion, and from all the research that we’ve done, we doubt that Geritol can help you get pregnant and think this is nothing more than a rumor. Our reasoning for thinking this comes from Geritol themselves.
Being a fertility aid could be a huge selling point for them, yet they shut down validation of this at any given opportunity. This leads us to think that they know it doesn’t help fertility or pregnancy – otherwise they’d be right behind this idea.
If you’re interested in using Geritol for fertility, we suggest checking with your doctor and looking at some other vitamin stacks designed for fertility enhancement first.
Geritol Reviews Summary
As you can see, Geritol is a widely used multivitamin, but it may not always be your best option. Especially if you’re looking to use it for pregnancy – you should look for prenatal alternatives, Geritol have not endorsed the claim that their product helps to promote fertility.
If you’re looking for the best multivitamin on the market, we don’t think Geritol is it. Although it has age on it’s side, it may only help you if you’re looking for something which has high amount of Vitamin B and Iron – if you need more than that it may not be for you.
