Fun Fact: Protein2o is sometimes misspelled with a ‘zero’ rather than an ‘o’, and also by misplacing spaces. Examples are: Protein20, Protein 2o, Protein 20.

Protein water is an alternative to protein shakes that you may come across on the supplement market. It is water infused with whey protein to still give you the benefit of a shake – without the heaviness that comes with this.

It does this by being less caloric and containing nothing but water and protein. There’s not many products on the market that offer this kind of benefit.

So, how well will it work for you?

As you can see, there’s not much in Protein2o Water – it’s just protein, flavoring and 60 calories (more or less).

This makes it a good option if you’re looking to keep on top of your macros as it only boosts your protein intake, not anything else like your carbohydrate or fat intake.

Below, we look at the pros and cons of these ingredients and what you may have missed regarding Protein2o.

Pros

  1. Natural Flavors – Protein2O uses no artificial flavors which can give you that sweet, natural taste without the side effects. However it does contain artificial sweetener sucralose (more on that later).
  2. No carbs or fats – This product contains no carbs or fats which makes them easier for you to manage your macros.

Cons

1. Not Vegan

Using Whey Protein is not a good idea for several reasons, the primary being is because it isn’t vegan. In doing so, this restricts the amount of people who can use Protein2O.

Not only is Whey an animal product, but it’s also a dairy product which can cause issues for those who are lactose intolerant.

2. May Cause Side Effects

Another issue with Whey is the dairy itself. Whey protein used to be a great resource when supplements first came out – as there was no other option – but now it should be avoided when possible.

Because it comes from dairy, it needs to be heavily processed to be fit for human consumption, and even then it has been linked to gastrointestinal distress, general stomach upset and diarrhea.

It’s not a great option for Protein2o to choose, we hope they consider a healthier alternative like rice protein in the future.

3. Contains Sucralose

Sucralose, also known as Splenda is not a great addition to Protein2o Water.

It’s a zero-calorie artificial sweetener. Although deemed safe, sucralose may raise blood sugar and insulin levels if you’re not used to taking it.

With raised blood sugar and insulin levels your body can store fat much easier, which can cause issues if you’re trying to stay lean.

There’s also some animal studies which show sucralose to have a negative effect on your gut bacteria.

Protein2o Bodybuilding

Is Protein2o suitable for bodybuilders?

It can be to some degree if you’re looking to boost your overall protein levels while staying hydrated. Protein is good for boosting your muscle mass after a workout – however, there are better sources of protein than whey.

As we’ve mentioned vegan protein like brown rice protein are easier for your body to absorb and are also don’t cause any digestive issues like the dairy properties of whey do.

Protein2o can still help you need 15 g of protein in a pinch – but there are better alternatives.

Is Protein20 Keto?

Yes. Protein2o’s macros suggests that it is suitable for a ketogenic diet. It is zero carb and contains protein – not infringing on any allowances you have on a keto diet.

However, you should know that the sucralose can raise your blood sugar and insulin levels – which could pose problems for your ketosis if you’re looking to stay in a fat burning mode.

As you can see, Protein2o is a nice idea – but it may have a few problems which stop it from being one of the better quick protein options on the market.

First off, we really appreciate the convenience of the ability to get a protein boost from just drinking flavored water straight from the bottle. It’s easy, keeps you hydrated and there’s plenty of great flavors.

That said, you need to consider the fact that this product contains the artificial sweetener sucralose – which can raise your blood sugar if you’re not used to it which may risk a ketogenic diet.

Another problem is the fact that it uses whey protein rather than a vegan alternative. Whey is linked to causing gastric distress, stomach upset and other digestive issues.

Protein2o has 15 g of protein, 0 g of carbs, 0 g of fat - and just 60 calories. But certain areas like relying on whey protein rather than pea or rice, and artificial sweetener sucralose let it down. It's good in a pinch - but not as a regular option.

As you can see, there is a good amount of protein in these bars, 21 grams which makes up for more than a third of the product. However, as you can see, there 19 g of carbohydrates in here too – which could be a problem for our keto dieters.

Most keto diets recommend a total of intake of 50 g of carbohydrates a day. There’s nearly half of the total intake in just one of these bars. That might be something worth considering.

It’s worth noting that a No Cow bar has a total of 210 calories. Which is more than most of the protein bars we’ve reviewed on the site.

Also Contains: Almonds. Produced on equipment that also processes peanuts, soy, milk, wheat, egg and other tree nuts.

This is definitely vegan, but we do have some issues with these ingredients and would like to point out a few pros and cons you may have missed with the No Cow Bar:

Pros

  1. Uses Stevia – Great natural sweetener that scores 0 on the Glycemic index.
  2. No artificial flavors – No Cow Bar is flavored completely naturally.
  3. No whey – Pea and rice protein is definitely the way to go in the modern age, given whey’s side effects.

And of course, some of the earlier points that we mentioned at the top of this review. However, there are some considerable cons to No Cow Protein Bars too.

Cons

1. Dairy-Free, Soy-Free, Gluten-Free and Vegan But…

Although No Cow Bar is totally free from dairy, soy and gluten and even Vegan – if you look at how this product is produced this may not totally be the case.

No Cow Bars are made on equipment that also processes soy, wheat, milk and eggs – which are the opposite of vegan, dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free lifestyle.

Although the bars aren’t made with these ingredients, there’s chance there might be trace amounts in these bars. This is definitely worth knowing if these are serious factors for your diet / health.

2. Contains Palm Oil

Palm Oil is currently having numerous negative effects on the environment, water and air quality.

No Cow says they get their palm oil from a sustainable source via the RSPO which is the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil – which is “certified sustainable”.

There have been studies showing that Palm Oil forests both certified and un-certified, may have similar effects on the environment and may even be considered as a tactic known as ‘Greenwashing’ to make it appear environmentally friendly, but to continue business as usual causing similar levels of damage.

There appears to not be much difference between certified and uncertified when it comes to forest degradation.

This is a huge issue and a lot to unpack – something that we’re not going to cover to much in a review of a $2.50 protein bar. If you want to learn more read this study.

No Cow Bar Keto

Is No Cow Bar Keto Friendly?

Not really. If you’re in a pinch – you could make it work. No Cow Protein bars have 19 grams of carbohydrates in a 60 gram bar.

Most Keto diets require you to have at maximum 50 g of carbs a day. This is nearly half your overall allowance. This gives you only another 31 g to for the rest of your meals throughout the day to avoid breaking ketosis.

In our opinion, if you’re keto, we’d avoid something that can eat this much into your overall carb allowance. Stick to low carb meals, or protein options that contain little to no carbs. This can allow you to have more freedom in what you have in your diet

As you can see, there are some advantages to using a No Cow Bar as your protein source – you just need ensure you’re okay with the fact that this bar may not be keto-friendly as it contains 19 grams of carbohydrates.

You also need to make sure that you’re okay that No Cow Bars although vegan and free from dairy, gluten and soy – are still made with equipment that also process milk, eggs, soy and wheat.

Finally, the palm oil debacle. Although certified-sustainable by the RSPO, it may not be all that it seems. Definitely an issue that needs further investigation.

Aside from that, No Cow Bars appear to be a great source of rice and pea protein which could help boost your macros for a quick protein hit on the go – along with a variety of flavors.

If you're looking for a protein bar that's cleaner than most of the market - No Cow may have what you need. However, the equipment it's processed on may not be as clean (handles milk, eggs, soy, wheat etc.) - make sure that's not a dealbreaker for you. Same goes for your stance on Palm Oil. Aside from that - good bar, but maybe not for a keto diet.

Most Keto and low carb diets recommend a maximum of 50 g of carbohydrates per day from your diet. Think Thin Bars provide more than half of that allowance. Keep that in mind when considering this product.

Again, the main thing to keep in mind here is that these bars contain whey protein isolate (excl. Chocolate Mint and Sea Salt Almond Chocolate), meaning that they are not suitable for vegans.

Think Thin Bars also contain Maltitol Syrup, which is also known as Sugar Alcohol – which has numerous problems of it’s own.

Problems with Maltitol Syrup

Maltitol syrup is made by artificially processing corn starch (or equivalent) and adding hydrogen to them.

The idea is that it’s a cheap sugar substitute which has fewer calories, and something that your taste buds won’t notice the difference.

However, it has been linked to causing the following issues:

  • Indigestion: Your body struggles to digest it, to the point that it ferments in your stomach which may lead to gas and bloating.
  • Diarrhea & Stomach Upset: Again, more of this stems from the fact that your stomach can’t effectively digest the maltitol – meaning it comes out in uncomfortable ways.
  • Raised Blood Sugar: Maltitol Syrup has a Glycemic Index (GI) score of 52. Natural sweetener stevia on the other hand scores 0.
  • Not Suitable for Diabetics: The 52 GI index may cause issues for diabetics as it could raise blood sugar levels.
  • Potential Weight Gain: Higher blood sugar levels, can cause higher insulin levels which lead to increased fat storage from the food you eat.

This is the biggest drawback in Think Thin Bars. If they used Stevia instead of Maltitol Syrup, we’d have far less of an issue with them.

For future reference, Maltitol is also known as Sugar Alcohol, Xylitol and Sorbitol. It can still raise your blood sugar despite having 0 g net carbs.

Are Think Thin Bars Keto?

No. Think Thin High Protein Bars are not keto, or suitable for a ketogenic diet.

As we’ve mentioned Think Thin Bars contains 26 g of carbs per serving which is over half the recommend max carbohydrate intake that you’re supposed stick to on a keto diet.

The next issue is that it contains Maltitol Syrup which has a glycemic index of 52 which could raise your blood sugar and risk your ketosis.

It’s better than many of the other protein bars out there when it comes to general health. A lot of the ingredients are completely natural and can work as a good source of protein.

However, we have issues with the Maltitol Syrup in this product which has links to causing side effects such as bloating, gas and general gastrointestinal distress.

It also has a 52 GI score which could pose a problem to diabetics and those on a keto diet.

Are they Gluten-Free?

Yes they are. thinkThin High Protein bars are claimed to be absolutely gluten free.

Do Think Thin Bars have artificial sweetener?

No. Think Thin Bars do not contain artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame potassium, neotame, or advantame.

However, they do contain Maltitol which as we continuously mention, harbors issues of its own.

Think Thin Bars are widely available across America and are an option if you’re looking for a low-cost, convenient source of protein.

The downside is that you have to compromise in several areas for this benefit. With 26 g of carbs per serving, the majority of the bars not being vegan friendly and the fact that it relies heavily on sugar alcohol (nearly a sixth of the bar) to give it flavor is a problem.

It gives it a higher GI score and may even cause gastrointestinal distress. If these factors aren’t an issue to you, feel free to try Think Thin Bars and see how they handle with you. However, if you want something plant-based, safe and reliable – you may have to look elsewhere.

This is our full review of Kirkland Protein Bars, here we look at these nutritional snacks from Costco to see how effective they are, and whether or not they are a healthy option for you.

Costco has gone through a love-hate relationship with their protein bars and have been known to change them around from time to time. In this newest iteration, their Kirkland Signature Protein Bars are claimed to be:

  • Gluten Free
  • No Artificial Flavors
  • Kosher Friendly

Along with a few other features which varies flavor to flavor.

In this report, we give you all the information you need on their newest formula and whether it is the right option for you.

Kirkland Protein Bars Discontinued

Were Kirkland Protein Bars pulled?

Yes. In early 2018, Kirkland Protein Bars were temporarily discontinued. The absence of the product lasted for a few months – presumably to allow old stock to sell out before introducing the new formula.

The Kirkland Signature Protein Bars returned around July 2018, however there were some noticeable differences.

During the process, not only were some of the aspects of the bar changed – so were the flavors. The Cinnamon Roll flavor did not return the shelves after the switch up.

Kirkland Protein Bars also stopped being available from other vendors such as Amazon.com – and have not yet returned.

How to use this information

This nutritional information tells you the following about Kirkland Protein Bars:

  1. Not Vegan Friendly – They use whey and milk protein which are dairy-based.

Below, we explore these points and look at why this matters in Costco’s Kirkland Signature Protein Bars:

1. Not Vegan Friendly

Kirkland Protein Bars get their protein source from whey and milk – which are both dairy products. The advantage of this is that it allows Costco to make and sell these bars at a cheaper price.

However, the disadvantages are far more noticeable. Here’s just a few of the issues:

Bovine sources have questionable cleanliness as it’s harder to know their origins. To consume whey protein it must undergo rigorous processing for it to be healthy to consume.

The taste on it’s own is not pleasant which means a lot of flavoring have to be added to improve it – which can affect the price.

Whey typically takes around 85 minutes for your body to absorb, whereas alternatives like rice protein can take just over 60.

The biggest issue is that whey protein is linked to causing digestive discomfort which may lead to issues such as gastric distress and a generally upset stomach.

2. May cause allergies

If you’re lactose intolerant or have any nut allergies – you cannot use this product. Kirkland Signature Protein bars are rife in dairy products such as whey and milk and also padded with cashew nuts too.

Although these are natural sources – if you’re intolerant you won’t be able to enjoy this product. We always find brown rice protein to be much more effective and friendly to most diets.

3. High in Carbs

The final point that’s worth mentioning here is that Kirkland Protein Bars contain 22 g of carbohydrates per bar. This is steep if you follow a ketogenic diet – and uses up a lot of your net carb allowance if you’re looking to stay in ketosis.

As we’ve mentioned, there are plenty of other options out there that can give you a high amount of protein – without the overlapping carbs.

Kirkland Protein Bars may give you gas. This is common with most products that contain a large amount of whey protein.

Most keto diets recommend consuming 50 g of carbohydrates or less when dieting to keep your body in ketosis and running off your ketones and stored fat.

Although these protein bars from Costco’s Kirkland falls within this category – it’s nearly half your allowance. There are plenty of other high protein options out there which support a keto diet – while refraining from juicing up the carbs.

It’s not the best option for you, but if you really want to make it work – you could.

Kirkland Protein Bars Costco | Where Else Can You Buy Them?

We all know that Kirkland is owned by Costco, but is there anywhere else you can buy their protein bars?

You could, up until recently buy you could look up ‘Kirkland Protein Bars Walmart’ and get it from there, as well as Amazon and numerous other online vendors.

However, after the reshuffle in early 2018, no other vendors seem to sell Kirkland Protein Bars. Costco have brought these products back to being sold exclusively on their shelves.

There’s no other locations where you can find them available.

Are Kirkland Signature Protein Bars Good? | Summary

From our Kirkland Protein Bars review – we feel that they’re not the best protein option – but they’re not the worst either. At $39.99 there are better options on the market to meet your protein needs, but Kirkland does have one advantage: it’s convenience.

Kirkland’s Protein Bars are easy to have on the go, they’re in bar form and don’t need to be put in a shaker.

However, the catch is that it’s not the best type of protein. Kirkland Protein Bars are not vegan, they are not suitable for everyone (contain dairy and nuts) and they are only keto friendly at a pinch as it takes up a lot of your carb allowance.

If you’re looking for a fast protein solution to your diet – this might be it. However, if you’re looking for the best protein solution – it isn’t.
